This garden sits squarely beneath a mature black walnut tree, which secretes a chemical compound toxic to other plants called juglone. Therefore the overarching criteria for the plant selection were tolerance to both juglone and shade. Within this framework we chose plants that bloom at different times of year and created a pleasing composition.
